Stephen Ward Gwartney, 75, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on December 15, 2024. Born on July 21, 1949, to Vira Mae and Vernon Gwartney, Steve lived a life marked by service, love, and dedication to his family.

A proud veteran, Steve served in the United States Navy from 1967 to 1972, including service during the Vietnam War. His military experience was a source of great pride throughout his life. After his honorable discharge, Steve built a successful career in banking in Kansas City, where he would ultimately create a loving home with his beloved wife, Marilyn.

Steve met the love of his life, Marilyn LaSala, while attending the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Their marriage would span an incredible 55 years, a testament to their deep commitment and partnership. Together, they raised two children, Cara (Ryan) Putnam and Daniel (Jennifer) Gwartney, and took immense joy in their three grandsons: Edison, Ellis, and Ari.

A passionate sports enthusiast, Steve was an avid golfer and a dedicated fan of the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs. In his younger years, he found particular happiness coaching his children's baseball and softball teams, creating cherished memories that his family will forever treasure.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents and his twin sister, Dorothy Lee Alvis. He is survived by his wife Marilyn, his children Cara and Daniel, their spouses, and his three grandsons.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the critical care nurses at Menorah Medical Center for their exceptional kindness and compassionate care during Steve's final days.

Services will be held at a later date and time at Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to a veterans' support organization of your choice.

Steve will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
