It is with profound sorrow that we announce the unexpected passing of Mr. James Curtis Betts, 80 years old, a loving father, grandfather, brother and uncle. Born on August 8, 1944, James left this world peacefully on October 20, 2024. Most notably Jim served his country proudly in the United States Army and fought bravely in the Vietnam War.
James was known for his kind, upbeat, and cheerful personality. He loved his Kansas City sports teams and engaging in text conversations during games with his son, Mike. He also enjoyed attending Royals games with daughter and son-in-law Tammy, Rex and grandson Dylan.
He enjoyed watching his grandchildren’s sporting events. No matter how hot or cold the temps were, he was always there to cheer them on. In fact, he never missed anything his grandchildren were involved in. Dance, baseball, football, soccer, basketball, school programs and graduations – you name it, he was there cheering loud and proud. He also loved seeing his grandson, Bryce, play lead guitar with his band. He even voiced his song choices; like “play some ZZ Top, Sharp Dressed Man”. Every milestone in his grandchildren’s lives he was there and always expressed his love for each of them.
He worked for TWA and then American Airlines and enjoyed many years of traveling the world, often with his children and grandchildren in tow. He especially loved Hawaii as one of his favorite destinations. His final workplace was Avis, where he had many friends.
The family lovingly remembers the many games of LCR and his shenanigans when playing the White Elephant Christmas Gift Exchange every year. It was no secret that he would “steal” your gift if it involved candy or food items. James is survived by his beloved children, Lesa Myers (spouse, Mike), Mike Betts (spouse, Wendy) and Tammy Cress (spouse, Rex), his 5 grandchildren, Chase, Bryce, Dylan, Kamryn, Garrett, 6 step-grandchildren, Addy, Tyson, Leighton, Rylan, Kaley, and Lauren and his brothers Barry (spouse Janine) and Brad (spouse Debbie). He was also uncle to 6 nieces and nephews. James was preceded in death by his parents BC and Arlo Betts, and niece, Laurie.
A graveside service to celebrate James's life will be held on November 1, 2024, at 2:00 PM at the Antioch Pioneer Cemetery. We invite all those who knew and loved James to join us in remembering and honoring his life.
As we mourn James's departure from this world, we find solace in the memories of his jovial, vibrant spirit and infectious enthusiasm for life.
