It is with deep sorrow that the family of Dennis Michael "Mike" Heffernan announces his passing on May 31, 2024, at the age of 84. Born in Ute, Iowa, and a long-term resident of Overland Park, Kansas, Mike was a pillar of strength, love, and wisdom to all who knew him.

Mike honorably served his country in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1965, displaying an unwavering commitment to duty. His pursuit of education later in life was marked by remarkable dedication, culminating in the completion of advanced degrees that led him to a respected career in the educational sector.

After nearly two decades in agriculture, Mike's professional journey took a turn as he became a valued and respected facilities manager at the University of Nebraska at Kearney and later at the Johnson County Public Libraries. He also co-owned a Merry Maids franchise with his wife, Shirley. His influence extended beyond his work, touching lives through his roles as a teacher at the Spencer School of Business in Grand Island, Nebraska, and as a coach at Kearney Catholic, where his children were educated.

Mike's passion for life was evident in his many hobbies. He cherished moments spent outdoors, whether running, golfing, or watching his grandchildren play soccer. A true sports enthusiast, Mike's spirit soared with the triumphs of KU sports, Nebraska football, and the Kansas City Chiefs.

His children are left to honor Mike's memory: Diane and James Romito, Kelly and Nathan Lager, Brian and Christy Heffernan, and Steve and Andrea Heffernan. His legacy will live on through his beloved grandchildren: Owen, Eli, Megan, Emily, Abby, Lily, Giuliana, Isaac, Erin, Sean, and Nora. His dear wife, Shirley Heffernan, his parents, Maurice and Helen Heffernan, and siblings Joe, Tim, JoAnn, and Janet preceded him in death.

The family invites friends and loved ones to join in commemorating Mike's life at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 12800 W. 75th St., Shawnee, KS 66216, where a Rosary, Funeral Mass, and Visitation will commence at 2:30 PM on June 17th. The burial will be at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, June 18th, at the Gate of Heaven. The Kansas City Funeral Directors are providing their compassionate services to the family during this time.

Mike Heffernan's enduring presence will be profoundly missed, and his memory lovingly enshrined in the hearts of those he leaves behind.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mike’s favorite organizations: Friends of the Johnson County Library, Catholic Charities, and KC Running Club.
